Sergei Isakov

Born in Narva, Sergei Isakov entered the Department of Russian Language and Literature, University of Tartu, in 1949. In 1954 he graduated cum laude and continued his career as a secretary at the Department of Russian Literature. From 1955 till 1967 Sergei Isakov was a Senior Lecturer, in 1967–1976 — an Associate Professor, and from 1976 — Professor of the Department of Russian Literature, University of Tartu. From 1980 till 1992 he was the Head of the Department. In 1983–1986 he worked at the University of Helsinki. In 1992 he became Professor of the Department of Slavic Philology. From 1997 Sergei Isakov has been Professor-emiritus of the University of Tartu.

In 1963 Sergei Isakov defended a Candidate’s (PhD) dissertation „Baltic in Russian Literature in 1820–1860“ at Leningrad State University. In 1974 in Tartu he defended his Doctoral (Doctor of Philology) thesis „Russian Literature in Estonia in the 19th Century“.

Professor Sergei Isakov delivered lectures in different universities: in Finland (Joensuu, Tampere, Turku, Jyväskylä, Oulu, ect.), in Italy (Bergamo) and Russia (Kazan, Saransk), in Latvia (Riga, Daugavpils) and Lithuania (Vilnius), in Georgia (Tbilisi) and Tajikistan (Dushanbe).

He had written about 500 works, including 10 monographic books, school and university textbooks, three anthologies and 750 encyclopedic articles. His works were published in many countries in Russian, Estonian, English, German, Japanese, Finnish, Polish, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Swedish, Ukrainian, Georgian, Armenian, Belorussian, and Tajik.

The main research fields of Professor Sergei Isakov were: 1) Russian-Estonian literary and cultural relations; literary and cultural contacts of Estonians with other nations, firstly, from East Europe and Transcaucasia; 2) archive research on the history of Estonian literature and periodicals; 3) cultural history of Russians in Estonia.

In 1970 Sergei Isakov was awarded the Literary Award of Estonia for the book „Through the Years and the Space“. In 1985 he and his co-authors received the State Award for the book „History of Tartu University“. In 2003 Professor Isakov was decorated with the White Star order of the Republic of Estonia. He was awarded a Pushkin medal of the Russian Federation in 2010.

From 1974 Sergei Isakov was a member of the Union of Estonian Writers. From 1995 till 1999 he was elected a member of the Parliament of Estonia (Riigikogu) as well as a member of the Baltic Assembly (= a parliamentary union of the Baltic States).From 1993 Professor Sergei Isakov was a president and supervisor of the Russian Research Center’s in Estonia.
